What is a direct sales company or MLM?

A direct sales company utilizes representatives or distributors to sell their products instead of carrying them in stores. This means that instead of the company’s profits going into the hands of retailers, they can pay it back to employees who do the selling and marketing for them. It also means that products tend to be sold at a higher-price (luxury pricing) and hold some sort of exclusivity.
Most of these companies are set up with a multi-level marketing or network marketing structure. This means that the reps/distributors make money for building a team of others reps and distributors working under them.

Do direct sales companies prey on moms?

When I started asking around about which MLM or direct sales companies are best for moms, I got a lot of feedback. Some from people who were loving on their companies. A surprising amount from moms who were very anti-MLM. The reason behind their negativity was the idea that MLM companies prey on moms. Let’s dive into that a little bit.

Direct sales companies are attractive to moms for a number of reasons – I wrote a post a while back that outlines 10 of them here. Everyone in the network marketing business know that. Reps with different companies see that as an opportunity to get moms on their team. Many moms – especially new moms – like the idea of working from home. They want to spend the time with their family while still bringing in income. It’s very easy for direct sales companies to dangle that idea in front of moms. Unfortunately, many reps out there do so in a way that is not ethical. They make false promises so that they can get more people to join their team and therefore increase their own income.

That does not mean that all direct sales opportunities are bad. It means that there are people out there who have been poorly trained. It also means that you have to do more work yourself in deciding if you want to pursue a direct sales opportunity.

So should you join a direct sales company?

I wish I could tell you the answer to that! There are so many factors that go into deciding if you should work with a direct sales company. Especially if you are considering replacing your full time income and becoming a work from home mom.
Many reps who are looking to recruit moms make it sound like it’s easy to just sit on your phone, post on Facebook, throw parties, and make money from it. That is not always the reality of making money online. As with any other job, you need to put in the work to be successful at it. There is money to be made in direct sales. If there wasn’t no one would do it. That doesn’t mean that it will be easy.

Do your research!

If you are interested in exploring a direct sales opportunity, make sure to do the research for yourself. Ask lots of questions. Make sure to check things out for yourself instead of just listening to someone who is trying to get you to join their team. Go directly to the company website for information on compensation plans, minimum ordering requirements, inventory requirements, any fees associated with the business, any recruiting requirements.

My Personal Experience

A few years ago I was working with a company myself, and really enjoying learning about marketing myself and working on my social connection skills. Working with that company didn’t end up being the right fit for me. I learned somethings from the experience, and putting myself out there.
The leaders on my team taught me new social media skills and online marketing skills that apply to my blog. I found that running a blog and building a network marketing business can go hand-in-hand.
Through parties and online interactions, I ended up making new friends through working parties that actually stuck.
I didn’t end up making money – in fact, I spent a good chunk while trying to get that opportunity off the ground.
In the end, I don’t regret trying, but I did find that direct sales is not a full time job for me. I will keep on keeping on as a working mom.

  1. I have never heard of a wine MLM before. I’ve yet to see a MLM product that actually interests me, but you had me at wine. 🙂 #globalblogging

    • That’s what we thought as well! Honestly, we’ve enjoyed it so far and made more friends than I expected. 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Sseko Designs is an amazing ethical Direct Sales company! Sseko provides dignified jobs and educational opportunities for women in Uganda and competitive compensation for women in the US who can sell Sseko products. The latest product line is STUNNING with customizable sandals, apparel, leather bags and jewelry.

  3. Seriously? MLMs are a plague on society. They’re dishonest & predatory in every way. They ruin lives, relationships & finances. If you’re going to promote such an awful choice, then you should share some REAL FACTS about the companies instead of just the positive. Actually there is NOTHING positive about any mlm. If you read something positive about them, it’s probably a lie posted by a hun trying to get sales. Why don’t you share the income disclosures if these companies are so great that you would actually suggest to people work for them? Look at the income disclosures of ANY MLM & you’ll see the FACT is that around 99% of every person who joins any MLM will lose money! They are pyramid schemes with an irrelevant, overpriced product to make it legal. Shame on you! I hope if anyone reads this awful article they do some real research before joining any of these scams!

    • This article is not trying to convince anyone that an MLM company is the right choice for them. It is intended to help women who are interested in joining a direct sales company to make an educated choice on which company to join. This is just the tip of the iceberg and should absolutely be used in conjunction with further research from additional sources.
You are right that many people join MLM businesses and lose money. There are many people who are not successful for one reason or another. There are, however, also many mothers who use an MLM company as a way to make an income while staying home with their babies. It is not the best choice for everyone, but it is an option that tis available to anyone who is interested.
The moms who chose to be interviewed for this blog post are all enjoying their work with their respective companies – that does make them a biased source of information, but it also makes them examples of success in their businesses.
